“It’s something I always had in the back of my mind” | Mike Prendergast on returning home as Munster coach

The Limerick man returned to the province this summer from Top 14 side Racing 92, where he held the role of Attack and Backs Coach since 2019.

Mike Prendergast’s appointment as coach at Munster was met with much optimism by all in the province when it was announced last April.

After spending a number of years in France, the Limerick native returns as part of an exciting backroom team under Graham Rowntree.

And with pre season kicking off over the past couple of weeks, Prendergast spoke of his positive experience thus far.

“Great. Enjoying it. It’s been really refreshing I have to say. I’m only a week or so back into it. It’s been excellent, working with the staff, there’s a great alignment there.

“The players and their hunger to get better has been clear to see. It’s been really positive so far.”

On completing his professional playing career in 2009 the scrum-half continued playing with his club Young Munster RFC while also progressing on the coaching front as he held Head Coach and Director of Rugby roles with the Limerick side.

And in his new role, Prendergast admitted that returning home was always part of the plan.

“I won’t lie, it’s something I always had in the back of my mind, it was just when the opportunity would come up.

“To come back to a club like this, I’m a local boy. I know what the club is about, I played here. You’ve your world renowned Thomond Park that I’m looking forward to. And the world class support so obviously a huge amount to be excited for.”
