The Football Association of Ireland today announced Stephen Kenny as the national U-21 manager and as expected they also confirmed that he will take over from Mick McCarthy as the senior boss after Euro 2020.
On taking the role, Kenny leaves his position as Dundalk manager where he won four league titles, two FAI Cups and two League Cups during his time at the Louth club. He also guided Dundalk to the group stages of the Europa League 2016.
Before taking over at Dundalk in 2012, Kenny was heavily linked with the vacant Limerick FC job but the club opted to give the role to Scot Stuart Taylor.
“I’m delighted with the position I have been offered and I’m looking forward to the next four years and beyond,” said Kenny at today’s unveiling. He added: “I’m excited to get started and work on developing and nurturing the next group of talented players.”
He also said that he hopes to bring plenty of talent from the League of Ireland through the U-21 set up and also name checked Limerick FC starlet, Will Fitzgerald, when speaking about talented youngsters around the league. Kenny had been rumoured to be interested in signing the Limerick player in the off-season.
