There was plenty of cup action in the Munster Junior and FAI Cups this weekend but no giant killings as the likes of Regional United, Aisling Annacotty and Pike Rovers made it through to the next rounds.
An inter-club derby took place in Annacotty between the junior A’s and B’s and although it looked like a formality as Annacotty A raced into a 2-0 lead through Liam Quinn and Shane Clarke. A double from striker Joey Ryan brought a determined and spirited B’s team back on level terms. It took a brilliant Shane Clarke finish in the final two minutes to continue Shane O’Hanlon’s side’s defence of the competition.
Regional United advanced in the same competition with a 2-1 victory over Fairview Rangers B at Dooradoyle. It always promised to be a tough encounter for the home side as Fairview B are currently top of the Premier A league. Goals from Kieran O’Connell and Jack Arra gave Regional a 2-0 lead before a late consolation from the visitors.
Pike Rovers safely advanced to the next round of the FAI Cup with a resounding 0-5 away victory against Coonagh United. Arron Murphy x2, Conor Layng, an own goal and Kevin Barry were on the scoresheet for Robbie Williams side.
Prospect Priory managed to overcome near neighbours Hyde Rangers after-extra-time on Hyde Road with a 2-3 victory. Yakouba Yabre, Tyrique Leamy and Adrian Healy scored for Wayne Colbert’s men who staved off the concession of two goals, including a super strike from Richard Benn to win the tie.
Nenagh AFC were comfortable 4-1 victors over Mungret Regional in the Premier Division. The home side raced into a 3-0 lead at Brickfields against their stunned opponents with Kieran Barr and Matthew Spain x2 scoring before Kieran O’Brien added a fourth to tighten the club’s grip on sixth place.
