Limerick downed by Waterford in Munster Senior Camogie Championship

Limerick bowed out of the Munster Senior Camogie Championship at the quarter final stages following an 0-12 to 0-6 loss to Waterford at the TUS Gaelic Grounds.

Joe Quaid’s charges made a fine start to the game but last year’s All-Ireland finalists soon took full control with Beth Carton starring for them at centre forward.

Limerick had Caoimhe Costello and Caoimhe Lyons in fine form throughout but were unable to find a greater spread of scorers to cause Waterford and great threat.

Limerick opened the scoring through Caoimhe Costello in the third minute and were given a great opportunity to add to their lead after Caoimhe Lyons was pulled down and referee Fintan McNamara awarded a penalty.

Costello stepped up and shot low to Brianna O’Regan’ right but the Waterford keeper made a brilliant stop to deny Limerick an early goal.

Waterford took control from there with two Beth Carton frees and a Lorraine Bray effort from play putting them 0-3 to 0-1 ahead after 12 minutes.

Lyons got Limerick on the board from play but Carton’s third free of the half saw Waterford restore a two-point advantage.

Carton was the star on show in the opening half hour and her fourth and fifth points of the half saw Waterford go in at the break leading 0-6 to 0-2.

Niamh Rockett and Carton put Waterford further in front at the start of the second half with Limerick replying thanks to Lyons’ second score of the contest. Costello then made it a four-point game with a ’45.

However, Waterford were soon back in control with Rockett firing over a couple of points to put them 0-10 to 0-4 clear with 15 minutes remaining.

Waterford continued to have the better of things in the closing stages and ran out comfortable winners in the end of a six-point defeat.
