Limerick Ladies make it two from two in National League with an impressive win in Wicklow

Second-half goals from Clare O’Meara and Cathy Mee ensured the victory as Limerick kept up pace with next weekend’s opponents Leitrim.

The Limerick Ladies Footballers made it two wins on the trot to kickstart their national league campaign with a trio of goals ensuring victory over Wicklow on Sunday afternoon.

Anna O’Dea was the first to raise a green flag inside three-minutes while she was followed in the goalscoring stakes by Cathy Mee and Clare O’Meara in the second half.

That was enough for a 0-8 to 3-6 win in Baltinglass with Limerick keeping pace with table toppers Leitrim who they meet this weekend at home.

The hosts were first off the mark before O’Dea gave Limerick a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Her goal was added to by a pair of points from Roisin Ambrose whose midfield partner O’Meara then pointed to give Limerick daylight at 0-1 to 1-3 after 11 minutes.

But Limerick wouldn’t score for the remainder of the half as Wicklow reduced the margin to three at the break. The deficit was back to a single point five minutes after the restart and the hosts could have taken the lead only for an exceptional save from goalkeeper Carol Bateman.

Her intervention seemed to spring Limerick back into the life with Mee netting for the next score with a quarter of an hour to play. Lauren Ryan pointed to increase the led before O’Meara put the contest to bed in the 57th minute.

Ambrose rounded out the Limerick scoring with her third as a late Wicklow brace proved inconsequential.

Limerick will have home comforts for the first time this weekend when they host Leitrim who already have a +67 points differential from their opening encounters.
