Limerick SFC weekend Round-Up

There were three games played in the Limerick Senior Football championship over the weekend with a number of Limerick’s All Ireland winning hurlers in action for their clubs.

Group 2: on Saturday evening in Kilmallock, St Kierans picked up their fourth successive victory over Oola with a 0-17 to 2-17 win. Darragh O’Donovan started for the East side while Richie English and Pat Ryan were introduced as second half substitutes. O’Donovan netted for a goal early in the first half but St Kierans still held a commanding 0-10 to 1-3 lead with Seamus Mangan leading from the front.

On his arrival in the second half, Richie English also found the net for Oola to reduce the gap to a single point with less than ten minutes remaining. However, as they have done all year, St Kierans resisted any comeback to secure their place at the top of the table ahead of their final round game against Newcastle West. As for Oola, they still find themselves pointless but have games against Newcastle West and St Patricks to come.

Elsewhere in the group, Fr Casey’s picked up a valuable win over St Patricks who were captained by All Ireland champion Gearoid Hegarty.

Despite failing to score from play in the opening half, St Pats only found themselves 1-6 to 1-4 in arrears at the half. John Riordan netted for Caseys, before Eoin Hanrahan scored a penalty for the city side just before the break.

John Mullane had the sides level after 35 minutes but St Pats would never take the lead with the west club knocking over the next five scores to pull clear ahead. Mullane replied with a couple of frees but it wasn’t enough as Fr Caseys ran out 1-14 to 1-11 winners in the Bog Garden.

Group 2: In their first year back in the senior ranks, St Senans have guaranteed safety and are pushing hard for a quarter final place after they defeated Na Piarsaigh 2-12 to 1-11 in Clarina on Saturday night.

Darren Kavanagh scored the only goal of the first half from the penalty spot to give the west club a 1-5 to 0-5 lead at the break. Na Piarsaigh were without any of their inter-county hurlers for the game.

The city club rallied after the break and levelled shortly after the resumption before Senans pulled clear once more. An Ollie Wallace goal with twn minutes remaining secured the win for Senans who now find themselves on five points ahead of their last day clash with already qualified Adare in a repeat of the 2016 Intermediate County final.

Na Piarsaigh find themselves bottom of the table but have a brace of games left to play. This Wednesday they face Adare before taking on Ballylanders in their final game.
