Limerick’s Best Hurling Game of the 21st Century: Last-16 #7

Earlier this week we asked the Limerick public to tell us what their favourite Limerick games of the past 20 years were.

From the list of games we were told we compiled a list of the Top 16 which will battle it out to be crowned the counties favourite game this century.

Our Top 16 Bracket was released on Saturday and can be seen here.

Our penultimate Last-16 pairing is live now and can be voted on on our Twitter and Instagram pages!

This pits the 2013 Munster semi-final win over Tipperary against the 2001 Munster semi-final victory against the Déise.

Limerick welcomed Tipperary to the Gaelic Grounds looking for a first Munster championship win since they beat the same opposition six years previously.

John Allen’s side were three to the good at the half but found themselves four down midway through the second half as they looked like losing a lead like they did twelve-months previously.

However, Limerick showed their mental resolve to score nine of the last ten points to advance to a first Munster Final since 2007.

Limerick’s last win in Pairc Ui Chaoimh came in the 2001 Munster semi-final against Waterford.

Incidentally it was the last time Limerick got four goals in a Munster championship and they were certainly needed on the day.

Favourites Waterford held a commanding 2-5 to 0-1 lead twenty minutes into the first half.

However, Ollie Moran’s goal would prove the catalyst for a huge comeback with Limerick trailing 2-7 to 1-4 at the break before second half goals from Brian Begley (2x) and Jamie Butler sealed a memorable comeback.
