Yesterday Westmeath secured promotion from Division 2A, to earn their spot in next years revamped Division 1 National Hurling League.
It will be the first time in 32 years that the Leinster side will play League hurling in the top tier.
Westmeath are under the tuteledge of Limerick’s Joe Quaid who was visibly delighted at the final whistle yesterday as Westmeath beat Kerry to secure their place for next spring.
Speaking to Newstalk after the game, Quaid compared his side’s victory to that of Limerick’s last summer.
“Its a phenomenal result for Westmeath hurling. I kind of compared it in the dressing room beforehand to like something Limerick achieved last year, a 45 year wait.
“Today is our day, a 32-year wait. I said to the boys, create your own legacy in Westmeath hurling.”
Quaid’s backroom team also includes Limerick men Willie Banks (Old Christians) and Mike Flynn (Na Piarsaigh).
Westmeath have been drawn in Group 1 of the League next spring that includes Limerick.
