Ireland meet South Africa in one of two 5-8 play-off matches at the World League World Cup Qualifier. If Ireland win they will be guaranteed a top six finish at the competition and thus book their place in next year’s World Cup in London.

In the the first three games of the competition the Irish side defeated Poland 2-0 whilst they picked up valuable draws against Germany and Japan. This was followed by a reversal against next year’s hosts England which was enough to secure a quarter final berth against the 3rd ranked side in the world Argentina. The Irish side were very unfortunate to lose the match on a scoreline of 2-1 against one of the competitions favourites.

In both losses thus far, the Irish side were only beaten by a solitary goal which has proven their quality. Limerick lady Roisin Upton has been a key part of the team and struck Ireland’s only goal in their loss to Argentina.
The crucial qualification tie takes place today at 1.30pm and is televised live on BT Sport. Best of luck to all involved.
