LIT open up Fitzgibbon Cup campaign with tricky DCU test

LIT are the final Limerick college to open up their Fitzgibbon Cup journey today as they host DCU in Moylish at 2pm. With UL and Mary I having mixed fortunes yesterday, LIT will be hoping to begin their campaign with a win against the side they knocked out at the quarter final stages last year.

There is a strong Limerick interest in the Davy Fitzgerald managed side with no fewer than 10 locals included in the squad. Diarmuid Byrnes, Andrew La Touche Cosgrave and William O’Meara were all involved in Limerick’s recent Munster League success.

Peter Casey is also part of the squad. Casey has yet to feature for his county this year as a result of Na Piarsaigh’s involvement in the Club All Ireland Championship. They face Slaughtneil in the All Ireland semi final next month as they hope to regain the crown they first won in 2016.

Added to the Limerick contingent are Clare Seniors Jason McCarthy, David Reidy and Peter Duggan who have all impressed for the Banner in previous years. Waterford’s Kieran Bennett is also part of the strong squad.

LIT last won the competition back in 2007  but have been beaten by champions Mary I, in the previous two years. Yet, in a three team group, LIT know that a win today would almost guarantee passage to the knockout stages of the prestigious competition.
