Loreto take advantage of Catholic Institute’s slip to move top of the EY Hockey League

The Limerick side are chasing a first-ever title after claiming the Irish Senior Cup in 2022.

Catholic Institute have been leapfrogged at the top of the EY Women’s Hockey League after being held to a 1-1 draw against UCD. Loreto’s heavy win over Ards puts them at the summit on goal difference.

After drawing with Monkstown last week, Insta took the lead in Dublin with Roisin Begley finding the target four minutes into the second quarter.

But with time running out in the final quarter, UCD struck to take a share of the spoils and keep their opponents within touching distance at the top of the first division.

Later that day, Loreto put seven past Ards knowing that a three-goal swing would be enough to see them move past Institute. They are level on 21 points after ten games with UCD back two points and last years champions Pembroke in fourth on 17 points.

The Limerick side aren’t back in action until February 11 when they travel to face Railway Union. The following week they will host the League leaders in Rosbrien.
