Upton discussed the growth of Hockey in Limerick, Catholic Institution and her busy 2022 schedule.
Limerick and Irish Jockey Superstar Roisin Upton is one of this years AIB GOAL Mile Run ambassadors that is encouraging people to walk 2,000 steps this month to help vulnerable communities in the 14 countries where GOAL works.
Speaking on her involvement with the charity Upton says a trip to Malawi helped her understand the need to support.
“I’ve seen first hand the work they have done so I’m delighted to be on board with the AIB GOAL Mile run this year as an official ambassador. The theme of this year is to walk 2,000 steps and when we were in Malawi there was people who had to walk 15,000 steps to get water, it was crazy. These people live in a completely different world. The GOAL Mile is just about walking 2,000 steps something which is so doable. especially when you consider the circumstances that people live in all over the world.”
On a personal level, Upton’s own side, Catholic Institute currently occupy their highest ever position in the EYHL Women’s League as they sit in fourth.
With a couple of players returning to the fold, Upton is hoping that the players can believe in their ability as they approach the business end of the season.
Yet, the Irish international is not getting ahead of herself with the side taking it “one game at a time.”
“It’s really exciting. As the season goes on I just want to shake the girls and help them realise how good they are and how good they can be. It’s one of the most exciting things about going back to Catholic Institute is just how keen the girls are to learn, how hungry they are for success.
“There’s a great buzz and we are taking it one step at a time.”
The growth of Hockey in Limerick is evident and Upton emphasised how important it is to have players coming through the Irish set ups to show that it can be done.
“It not only fills me with pride but there’s also a great buzz. To see the girls coming through Irish underage team, Anna and Leah, and then you look down at the U18s Kate Ryan and Sarah Fitzgerald, all names you’ll hear more and more of. There’s great pride in the club, everyone supporting each other and the more Catholic Institute girls you can get in the Irish jersey the better.”
