Newcastlewest & Abbeyfeale to Contest Transfield Cup at Markets Field

On next Sunday, 27thJanuary 2019, the Markets Field will stage the Transfield Cup Final with kick-off at 2.30pm between last year’s winners Newcastlewest RFC and their neighbours Abbeyfeale RFC.

This famous trophy was presented by T. C Transfield, a proprietor of a circus in O’Connell Avenue, Limerick in 1895. It is the second oldest trophy in Munster

12 teams entered the competition. On their way to the Final, Newcastlewest defeated Young Munster, St. Marys and Richmond in an effort to win the Trophy for a fourth time. Abbeyfeale, who hold a distinguished record in Munster Rugby have yet to win the trophy, on their way to the Final defeated Shannon and St. Senan’s.

The Transfield Cup Final will take place at Markets Field for the first Junior 1 competition North Munster Final there for over 75 years. The North Munster Sub-Committee are expecting a good attendance to witness a close encounter between these two clubs from West Limerick. Kick-off is 2.30 pm.
