On This Day: Second half surge enough to maintain survival hopes for the footballers in 2015

March 29

On this day six years ago the Limerick footballers maintained their survival hopes with a win over Clare in the 6th Round of the National Football League in Newcastle West.

2015

Limerick enhanced their slim hopes of League survival with a double points win over Clare in Newcastle West in Round 6 of the National Football League Division 3.

Having lost four successive after an opening day win, Limerick needed a result against neighbours Clare and set out so racing into a 1-3 to no score lead inside a quarter of an hour.

With the aid of a breeze, Seanie Buckley grabbed the decisive early goal and clipped over two points to boot.

But Clare gradually grew into the game and had three of the final four scores of the half to trail 1-4 to 0-3 at the short whistle.

That lead had vanished within nine minutes of the restart as Pat Burke made no mistake from the penalty spot to leave it perfectly poised at 1-5 apiece with 20 to play.

Limerick’s response was emphatic as they kept Clare scoreless for the remainder of the contest while doubling their tally.

Cian Sheehan, Ian Ryan and Danny Neville moved Limerick three clear before 1-1 from Peter Nash sealed the victory.

This set up a final day clash away to Louth where anything but a win would see Limerick relegated.
