After some shaky tournaments and a couple missed cuts, Seamus Power looks to get back to his best.
The worlds best golfers will be back once more this week as they compete to win one of golf’s biggest tournaments, The Player’s Championship.
The tournament consists of a total of 144 players who take part each with the hopes of winning the trophy and the large some of prize money.
The current no.1 player in the world, Justin Thomas won this tournament a year ago. He will be looking to complete the seemingly impossible and win the championship two years in a row. The likes of John Rahm and Rory McIlroy will also be competing.
The Players may be one of the best tournaments in the world, but it does not qualify as a major, although it is held to the same standard as the Open and the other majors. It has the unofficial name of the “Fifth Major”. The tournaments prize money is astronomical, coming in at a whopping $20,000,000 with the outright winner bagging 3.6 million dollars.
Munster native, Seamus Power will be competing and representing Ireland at the tournament in Florida. Power will be looking to book his place at the Masters after a lacklustre showing last time he took to the course. At the moment Ireland have three players to represent the island at the Masters, that being Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry and Padraig Harrington. McIlroy is currently 6th in the world with Lowry sitting at the 36th spot.
To qualify for the Masters, one must be sitting in the top 50 of the PGA tour rankings. Recently Power missed the cut at the Bay Hill invitational that was held on Orlando. This missed cut puts Power exactly on the No.50 spot for the tour, a dangerous place to be as one slip up can cost him his place at Golf’s greatest tournament.
Power will certainly be competing with the best of the best, as the new generation of golfers look to stamp their control on the sport. The likes of Scottie Scheffler and Colin Morikawa are leading the FedEx leader boards at the moment. Superstars John Rahm and Dustin Johnson will also be competing.
This season Seamus Power has played his best Golf of his career, in tough tournaments he has been able to pull some magical shots out of nowhere. His prize money earned that comes in at $1,588,217 testifies to his quality, alongside his 13 top ten finishes. With a big performance over the next four days, we could be seeing yet another Irish Golfer in touching distance of that prestigious green jacket.
The Waterford man will be teeing off at 1.18pm Thursday.
