Preview: Looking ahead to Limerick Ladies Junior Championship opener against Wicklow

Limerick Ladies will face a tough test in Wicklow this coming Sunday in the opening round of the All-Ireland Junior Championship.

Donal Ryan and his side will look to start off with a bang and get an opening day victory to kick off their championship campaign.

In the Junior championship Wicklow have been close to success as they were runners-up in 2020 only losing out to Fermanagh.

Wicklow play in division three of the League, a step up from their counterparts who play in division 4.

Thje Leinster side will hope to show their experience of playing at a higher level come Sunday having last won the title in 2011 where they beat New York.

Limerick last won the championship in 2018 but saw a vastly different campaign the season after as they were relegated in 2019.The Treaty side also won the competition in 2010 and will look to return to winning ways this year.

The venue for the game will be Kilkenny in the John Locke Park located in Callan. Limerick will want a win as they will see Derry in the next round and will want momentum going into more fixtures against Carlow and Antrim.

The top four teams from the five within the championship will move on to a play off stage to challenge for the All-Ireland semi-finals.

Mark Murnaghan’s side will look to take last year’s form into this campaign and start with a win against an ever-improving Limerick team.

Ryan’s side last outing was an underwhelming performance in Galway against Leitrim in their division four semi-final in which they lost 2-07-4-12. After a slow first half left them with too much to do and unfortunately failed to claw themselves back into contention in the game.

The second half was much improved, however it was too little too late as the damage was done in the first half.
