Sigerson Cup competitors unveil 2023 squads with UL Limerick’s sole representative

A Limerick college is yet to win the competition with UL reaching the final for the first time since 1997 earlier this year.

The squads for the 2023 Sigerson Cup have been unveiled with 14 different colleges in contention for the prestigious event. There are five Limerick players represented across four colleges.

Last year’s finalists UL provide a pair of players in the form of Ronan McElligott (Mungret St Pauls) and John Hayes (St Kierans). Both were part of the team that reached the final in 2022 where they were bested by NUIG.

Tommy Griffin (Gerald Griffins) represents SETU Carlow once again and is the only Limerick players based outside of Munster. Griffin has been a staple of the intercounty side that has earned two promotions in three years.

Galbally’s Eoin O’Mahony is a part of the MTU Cork side while Kilteely Dromkeen’s Robert Holmes will represented MTU Kerry. The Tralee outfit were beaten by eventual champions NUI Galway in last year’s semi-finals.

NUIG moved to 23 titles in January with their win that tied them with UCC in the roll of honour. UCD are well out in that front in that regard with 34 triumphs to their name.

The final is set for February 15.
