Storm Franklin puts a stop to the majority of domestic rugby contests at the weekend

Storm Franklin hit late on Thursday evening and had almost every pitch in the country flooded within hours, nevermind the high winds that would prove almost impossible to play in.

The weather disrupted the provincial program with only two of the 18 games scheduled in the Munster Junior League going ahead.

Clanwilliam moved their home game in Section B against Mallow to Musgrave Park and this ended in a dramatic finish. A penalty from Niall Leahy two minutes into added time edged Clanwilliam 15-13 ahead, where a win would see them win their section of the league, but two minutes later Jimmy Glynn converted his third penalty to give Mallow the points on a 16-15 scoreline. Micheál Sharpe and David McCormack scored tries for Clanwilliam with Leahy converting one. Stephen Hayes scored Mallow’s try which Glynn converted.

The only other game played was in Conference E where Castleisland extended their lead at the top of the table with a 14-6 home win over Douglas. Jonathan Bell and CJ O’Sullivan scored tries for Castleisland and Joseph Sheedy converted both. Padraig McSweeney replied with two penalties for Douglas.

New dates will be announced later for the fifteen postponed games in the league because of the weather, so it is the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup games that will dominate next week’s provincial program.
