Eoin Brislane’s men became the first Limerick side to win the Munster Intermediate Hurling title since Effin’s triumph in 2011.
Monaleen were crowned 2022 AIB Munster Hurling Intermediate Club champions on Saturday following their 1-22 to 0-18 victory over Roscrea at Pairc Ui Rinn.
An electric second half performance from Monaleen got them over the line after an evenly contested first half. The Limerick PIHC champions began to pull clear in the remaining minutes with an Ed Doyle goal sealing the victory and completing an impressive county and provincial double for the City side.
Instrumental to their late goal was Andrew La Touche Cosgrave, who missed a large chunk of the season following surgery earlier in the year. Cosgrave was delighted to claim the win but admitted the success is ‘bonus territory’ and highlights the team-building side of things as their most important aspect.
“Ah it’s great. As I said there in the interview the other day, we set out at the start of the year just to go out and enjoy ourselves, we built a bond, we kept momentum going but this is just bonus territory. We sat down after the county final and we said ‘do we want to have a go at this’ because we’re well capable, we’re looking at building a team and we said we do.
“We just want to stay together, that’s all. This is all bonus the cups, all that, that’s all bonus, but we just want to stay together, build a bond. I know I’m looking forward to another two weeks of training and going on another step further again.”
Cosgrave, who won an All-Ireland with Limerick but has struggled with injuries in recent years, believes that success with the club is incomparable to success with the county side and that many other players are in agreement.
He labelled it as a ‘priority’ for him to win with his club as they became the first team from the club to win a provincial hurling title.
“County is great, absolutely but I’m sure you hear all your county players say it that there’s nothing like winning with the club and that’s what it’s all about, it’s where it starts and where it finishes so again winning with the club would be a priority for me so again as I said, it’s great having everyone that you grew up with along winning and having a good momentum.
Attentions for Monaleen now turn to an All-Ireland semi-final with Trim/Bray Emmets on the weekend of December 17/18.
