Limerick’s Roisin Upton got Ireland off the mark in their 4 – 1 win over the French.
The Irish Women’s hockey team move on to the semi-finals of the FIH World Cup qualifiers with their win over France in Pisa.
Despite a goalless first-half, the Irish Women’s side came to life in the second-half by finding the back of the french net four times and only conceding once.
Ireland’s first goal came from Limerick native Roisin Upton from a penalty corner won by Sarah Hawkshaw.
Ireland didn’t score again until the games’ fourth quarter thanks to Hannah McLoughlin who nailed a rebound from a penalty corner.
Hawkshaw kept the French goalie busy until Zara Malseed scored Ireland’s third, the French earning a consolation goal just minutes later in the form of Guusje van Bolhuis.
In the games dying minutes Ireland exploited the French defence again, with debutante Niamh Carey cleaning up a Ellen Curran attempt.
Ireland now face Belarus in the semi-finals of the FIH World Cup qualifiers next Saturday October 23rd at 11am Irish time.
