So there you have it, a Limerick sporting icon has hung up his gloves and leaves behind a glittering career that saw become an olympian, a world champion and a national and local hero.
In making the announcement the 33 year old Castleconnell man said it was the “right time” to walk away from the game and with 35 wins from 39 encounters, he has certainly done his time.
“I’m 33 years old. I’ve achieved everything I want in the game. Its been on my mind for a while. I kept myself available to see what my options were, if a fight came along that enticed me back. None of the offers were good enough or big enough to go back.”
I’ve a responsibility now as a father. To leave my wife and daughter to go away from them to a training camp would take a big offer,” said Lee.
In 2014 Lee claimed the WBO middleweight title with a knockout over the then unbeaten Russian Matt Korobov. The win ensured Lee’s place amongst Limerick and Ireland’s sporting greats. You can see highlights of that famous bout on the clip below.
