Young Munster & Old Crescent to lock horns in Sporting Limerick Charity Cup Final

The first Senior trophy of 2020 will be decided when the holders Young Munster play Old Crescent in the Sporting Limerick Charity Cup Final on Thursday evening, 2nd January 2020, in Rosbrien at 7.30pm.

The Sporting Limerick Charity Cup Final in recent years was held at Markets Field and the organisers are deeply grateful to the management there for hosting many matches there. It is anticipated that there will be an early return there next year. However, there is great interest in both clubs and the wider Rugby family about this year’s Final.

Welcoming the event, North Munster Rugby Chairman Ger McNamara said that it was featuring two clubs who are playing such exciting and expansive Rugby and is a game not to be missed. On their way to the Final, Old Crescent defeated Shannon and Bruff whilst Young Munster defeated Nenagh Ormond.

The two clubs have a long association with this Competition which is in in its 95th year. It was initiated in 1924 as the Hospitals Cup to raise funds for Barrington’s Hospital and St John’s Hospital. After 5 years it changed its name to Limerick Charity Cup to incorporate other charities.

The clubs will also play for the Michael Kelly Cup which is played every year at this time. It commemorates a man who gave sterling service to Young Munster and was also a great friend to Old Crescent in its early years.

A bumper crowd is expected for this historic night which will benefit local charities, including Milford Care Centre Daughters of Charity, St. Vincent’s, Lisnagry, Parkinson’s Association, Redemptorist Fathers Christmas Poor Campaign, Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Limerick Marine Search and Rescue.

This should be a great sporting occasion and we urge you to support this match which is hoped can make a significant contribution to deserving local charities.
