Our Reeling in the Years of Limerick GAA continues today as we travel back to 2000 and the start of the new milennium.

Hurling

National Hurling League

After a dismal 1999 campaign, Limerick, under the tutelage of Eamonn Cregan had a fine league campaign winning five of their six group games.

In Division 1A, Limerick beat Offaly, Clare, Dublin, Kerry and Antrim, only losing to eventual league champions Galway.

Limerick would be defeated by Tipperary, 2-18 to 0-17 in the semi-finals.

Munster Hurling Championship

In the Munster semi-finals, Limerick were drawn to face All-Ireland champions Cork in Semple Stadium.

Limerick stayed in touch with the Liam MacCarthy holders but eventually succumbed to a 2-17 to 1-11 defeat, ending their season.

However, the Limerick U21 hurlers won their first U21 All-Ireland since 1987.

In Munster, they gained revenge for the Senior Championship loss, as they put Cork to the sword, 4-18 to 1-6 in the final.

Antrim were accounted for in the semi final before they defeated Galway 1-13 to 0-13 in the final.

Football

National Football League

The 1999/2000 National Football League would prove disastrous for Limerick once again.

Six losses would come from their seven games with a solitary win over London to show for their endeavours.

Munster Football Championship

Like the hurlers, Limerick were drawn against Cork in the opening round of the championship.

While defeat would be the outcome once more, Limerick’s growth was underlined by the performance against the Rebels.

While they were defeated by sixteen points by the same opposition twelve months previously, this time the score was halved as they lost out on a much more respectable 2-8 to 3-13 scoreline.

Again the u21s would take the spotlight as they were crowned Munster champions after a nailbiting win over Waterford in the decider.

The youngesters would reach the decider where they were pitted against Tyrone who had won two titles at the grade in the ’90’s and were packed full of stars.

Nonetheless, Limerick were well in touch at half time as they trailed by a point, 1-4 to 0-6.

However, Tyrone’s superior ability would come to the fore in the second half as they eventually won out 3-12 to 0-13.

Club Championships

Hurling

Patrickswell made it four wins in six years as they denied Doon in the final, 0-16 to 0-15 in an epic encounter.

Hospital Herbertstown were crowned Intermediate kingpins.

Glenroe and Knockainey took Junior A and Junior B honours respectively.

Football

Just two years after winning the Junior A championship, Dromcollogher Broadford contested the Limerick SFC final against Fr Caseys.

In the end, the Abbeyfeale side would overcome the Intermediate champions of twelve months previous by a point to win thier seventh ever title.

Gerald Griffins earned promotion to the senior ranks as they won the IFC.

Adare won out the Junior A championship while Ballybricken took home Junior B Honours.
