Limerick Camogie falter in championship opener

The Limerick Camogie side fell to Westmeath, 1-12 to 0-12 in their Liberty Inurance All-Ireland championship opener in Bruff yesterday.

In their first game at the grade, Westmeath lead from start to finish and were deserving victors.

An electric start paved the way for the win as they had frive scores from their first five shts prior to the waterbreak.

Limerick in contrast could only muster a brace of scores as they trailed 0-5 to 0-2.

Westmeath would conjure the games first goal after 25 minutes to power into a commanding 1-7 to 0-2 lead.

Four on the bounce from Paul Sexton’s side reduced the gap to 1-7 to 0-6 at the half.

Limerick continued this momentum after the restart as Caoimhe Costello opened the second half scoring.

But that would be as good as it got as Westmeath got the last four scores of that period to hold a 1-11 to 0-7 advantage at the final water break.

Limerick battled valiantly and had five of the last six scores but it would count for little as Wesmeath held on for a three-point victory.

Limerick will face Waterford next weekend after they lost to Kilkenny yesterday.
