PREVIEW: Limerick minor footballers take on Clare in Munster semi-final

The Limerick minor footballers will play Clare in the Munster minor semi-final on Friday evening.

The game takes place at Cusack Park in Ennis at 19:00 and there will be coverage on YouTube from TG4.

On the other side of the draw, Kerry take on Cork at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Kevin Denihan has made one change to his team to take on the Banner with Culann Quigley coming into the side in the place of his clubmate Michael Kilbridge.

It will be an elusive Munster MFC final for the Treaty county should they get the better of Clare, with 1998 being the last time Limerick achieved that feat.

On that day, Conor Mullane captained the side as they lost out to Kerry who boasted the likes of Marc Ó’Sé and Tadhg Kennelly.

Limerick had to overcome Tipperary on their way to this semi-final, winning on a scoreline of 2-9 to 1-9.

Speaking after that game, manager Kevin Denihan said that he was ‘thrilled’.

“All of this is six or seven months of Zoom sessions, it was really tough. The management team have been phenomenal, coming up with different ideas, keeping the lads entertained and keeping them active.”

“We have things to work on and we know that – some of our shooting and shot selection, but tonight was all about getting the result and we will worry about the performance tomorrow and review it and look back.”

Looking back on last year’s iteration of this fixture, Clare came out comfortable winners, beating Limerick 4-20 to 1-10.

Monaleen’s Darragh Murphy and co will be looking to overturn their fate from that game.

On the challenge of Clare, Denihan is hoping the lads continue the theme of ‘expressing themselves’ on the pitch and ‘enjoying their football’.

“We know what Clare are going to possess. The one thing we did mention the first night after the draw was complacency. There’s going to be absolutely none whatsoever. There’s no such thing as the nice side of the draw, avoiding Cork & Kerry. There’ll be nothing handed out easily.”
