Limerick native Claire O’Riordan completes move to Celtic FC Women

The Irish international had spent the last four years plying her trade in the Frauen-Bundesliga in Germany.

Celtic FC Women have confirmed the signing of highly touted Irish international Claire O’Riordan ahead of this weekend’s clash with Partick Thistle.

The Newcastle West native joins the Scottish giants after four seasons with MSV Duisburg in Germany where she helped the side to promotion last term.

O’Riordan had previously played with Wexford FC where she won a trio of League titles.

Speaking to the Celtic Website, O’Riordan spoke of her excitement to get started with the club.

“It feels really exciting. I’m really excited for the challenge ahead and it’s been a really nice experience so far meeting the team, the coaching staff, and everyone has been so friendly and so welcoming so far.

“I had a really good conversation with Fran and I really liked his philosophy of playing and that’s something I want to improve in my game.

“It seemed like a good fit for both of us and I’m really looking forward to hopefully bringing my experience here.

“I want to get stuck in. I’ve really enjoyed training so far and I’m already looking forward to the season.”

O’Riordan was a relative late comer to the sport but has gone on to make 17 appearances for Ireland after never gaining an international cap at underage level.

And the Limerick woman is hoping that her GAA background will continue to stand to her as she represented her county in both Camogie and Ladies Football before switching her focus to soccer solely.

“With my characteristics from playing GAA, I feel I have that physical attribute to my game.

“Duels are a big thing and being strong in the air is what I can bring to this team and hopefully I will be able to share my experiences and the knowledge I have gained in the last few seasons, especially being in Germany.

“But I want to get information from the team as well and with Fran’s philosophy.”

O’Riordan will now focus her attention on trying to dethrone Rangers with Celtic making the perfect start to the season with a 9-0 win over Hibernian last weekend.
