“It’s an unbelievable day for the club” | Kildimo-Pallaskenry captain Kyle Hayes on his side’s promotion to group one

Kildimo Pallaskenry beat Garryspillane on Saturday to book their promotion to the top tier of Limerick hurling.

It’s been a sensational few years for Limerick side Kildimo-Pallaskenry and finishing top of group two and earning a place in the SHC quarter-finals on Saturday was another reason for the side to celebrate.

Beating Garryspillane 0-23 to 0-19 in Caherconlish in the final round of this year’s championship secured a third promotion in five years for the City outfit who have gone from strength to strength over the last decade.

Last year was their maiden year playing in the SHC ranks as they narrowly missed out on the knockout stages.

The side were winning Intermediate Hurling Championships only five years ago and it’s been a rapid rise to the top as they confirmed their place with Na Piarsaigh, Kilmallock, Doon, Patrickswell and Ahane for 2023.

Kildimo Pallaskenry captain and Limerick star Kyle Hayes refelcted on the latest achievement after the match and was full of praise for his side.

“Every game we got an extra five or ten per cent out of us and we’re peaking at the right time now so, it’s an unbelievable day for the club like, they way it is we’ve never been in the top six tier ever so it’s a massive achievement for us.

“We never got carried away, we looked at the game ahead every week and I think that kind of stood to us there a lot because you can get carried away and it was just important we stayed grounded.”

Hayes himself began hurling for the Kildimo Pallaskenry senior side in 2016 and has since seen the side promoted on three occasions including, culminating over the weekend as they completed the move from lower intermediate to Senior A.

The four-time All-Ireland winner reflected on the years he’s been involved with the club and admits next year the side will completely different goals in comparison to the last few.

“Every kind of two years we’ve won the competition we’re in, so we’re in the Senior A now there’s only one more left but it’s a totally different goal next year for us so if we can just kind of take each game by each game .”

“Before that we have a bonus of a game in three weeks time so we’ll take that first and worry about that then next year.”

But for now, attention will turn to that quarter-final with Doon on October 8 where Hayes and co will attempt to break new ground for the club.
