The news will come as a shock this morning after the Newcastle native successfully guided Limerick back to Division 2 last Spring.
After six years in charge of the Limerick footballers, Billy Lee has stepped down from the role it has been confirmed this morning.
Just last year, Lee guided Limerick back to Division 2 for the first time in fifteen years as they reached the League final against Louth.
Limerick also made it to a first Munster final in twelve years where they were beaten by Kerry in 2022.
Limerick GAA confirmed the news on Twitter this morning as they thanked Lee for his contributions in the role but also his previous positions in the Academy.
Lee inherited the side in 2017 with the team preparing for life in the bottom tier. An eventful couple of years eventually saw the side escape Division 4 in 2020 following the pandemic interrupted campaign.
This came off the back of a first Munster championship win in seven years as they defeated Tipperary in the provincial quarter-finals in 2019.
Limerick went on to reach three successive Munster semi-finals under Lee, finally making the breakthrough this May where they overcame the Premier county in Semple Stadium once more.
Kerry proved a bridge too far in the final, their first since 2010, while Cork knocked the Shannonsiders out in the qualifier stages.
For the first time since 2007, Limerick will play Division 2 football next year as Lee successfully guided his team to a second promotion in three years earlier this Spring.
His replacement is yet to be announced with the statement confirming the process to find a successor “will now commence.”
