Newcastle West have the opportunity to retain their SFC title for the first time in their history on Sunday.
The latest edition of Newcastle West and Adare in the Senior Football Championship takes place this Sunday when both teams clash for the title in Kilmallock.
Both sides have remained perfect throughout the whole campaign with the two topping each of the groups as well as narrowly getting through their respective semi-final clashes a fortnight ago.
It’s been a campaign like no other for Jimmy Lee and his Newcastle West side with dual commitments coming to the forefront for them.
Lee himself has been in charge of both the hurling and football teams for NCW and felt the physical and mental demands of the difficult task with the hurlers just falling short of the PIHC final.
Yet, Lee isn’t ready to decide whether it was a good decision to take on both roles as of yet with the Senior Football Final looming.
“I said to the lads after we finished with Bruff in the semi-final that I’d look at it once we’d finished with the football and the give myself two weeks with a bit of downtime and then we’d review it and see where we’re at.
“Was it a good idea? I don’t know, someone else would have to answer that. I managed it, at times. The one thing is I couldn’t fight with myself so that was probably an easy thing!”
A familiar face stands in the way of NCW from retaining the title, with their 2021 and 2017 final opponents Adare contesting for the SFC crown on Sunday.
A new rivalry has blossomed from their recent dominance, with 2022 set to be the sixth successive title to go either way with Lee commending his opponents and acknowledging the threat that they will possess on Sunday.
“The last few years have been described as a trilogy and I suppose that’s what you could call it, it’s no different.
“As I say, they’re a good team, they know how to win, the management team of Adare know how to win so it has the ingredients to be a good game. Obviously, we won’t know that until the day but we won’t be taking the opposition lightly for certain.”
Newcastle West face Adare in Kilmallock this Sunday at 3pm in the Limerick Senior Football Championship Final.
