Limerick’s Best Hurling Game of the 21st Century: Last-16 #6

Earlier this week we asked the Limerick public to tell us what their favourite Limerick games of the past 20 years were.

From the list of games we were told we compiled a list of the Top 16 which will battle it out to be crowned the counties favourite game this century.

Our Top 16 Bracket was released on Saturday and can be seen here.

Our sixth Last-16 pairing is live now and can be voted on on our Twitter and Instagram pages!

This tie pits the 2018 All-Ireland Final victory over Galway against the 2018 Munster Championship win over Tipperary that kickstarted that journey.

Limerick got their first win under John Kiely as they defeated Tipperary with six points to spare in the first round of the 2018 Munster Championship.

Kiely’s side dominated proceedings but Jason Forde kept the visitors in with a chance and had the sides level when he got his second goal of the day on 58 minutes before putting Tipp ahead moments later.

However, Limerick would have the final say when substitute Barry Murphy notched Limerick’s only goal of the game before they pulled away for the win.

Limerick travelled to Croke Park in August 2018 to take on defending champions Galway in their first All-Ireland decider since 2007.

Limerick were near flawless in the opening 65 minutes holding an eight-point lead over Galway with Graeme Mulcahy, Tom Morrissey and Shane Dowling notching goals.

However, there was a late surge from the holders as goals from Conor Whelan and Joe Canning brought the Tribesmen back to within a point, seven minutes into the eight minutes of additional time.

Reigning Hurler of the Year Joe Canning was presented with a chance to level with the final puck of the game but his long range free dropped short with Tom Condon the man to escape with the sliotar.
