Listen: Rooney feels there is now “a pathway” for girls in the mid-west

Limerick FC Senior Women’s manager Dave Rooney took time from a busy schedule to speak to Sporting Limerick about the formation of the Women’s side last year and the plans for the future.

Rooney also plays a big role in Tommy Barrett’s backroom team for the men’s senior side in the Airtricity League and regularly scouts opposition and can be seen warming up goalkeepers Jack Brady and Tommy Holland on match days.

Rooney feels that the formation of the women’s senior soccer team in Limerick was long overdue.

We are representing Limerick FC but we have made it clear from day one that we are looking to be the senior women’s outfit for the mid-west.

We had 25 girls signed for the senior team last year and then 20 under 17 players.

We have girls coming from as far as Cork, Galway, Portlaoise and a huge contingent from Limerick, Tipperary and Clare. We are looking to cover all the areas of the Midwest.

Rooney gives a detailed interview where he describes the progress made within a year and the vision for the future. Also, he discusses the league season so far and his dual role with Tommy Barrett and the senior men’s team.
