On This Day: Hurlers miss out on promotion in 2016 as Footballers pick up away win in 11′

March 20

On this day five years ago, the Limerick hurlers missed out on promotion with a loss to Clare while the footballers had a League win in Drogheda in 2011.

2016

Limerick’s hopes of promotion to Division 1 were dashed as they fell to Clare 1-19 to 0-18 in the final round of the National Hurling League.

John Conlon’s goal gave the Banner an early lead as they raced into a 1-13 to 0-1 lead in Ennis.

After 22 minutes, they were 1-6 to 0-4 to the good before Limerick took over. They outscored Clare 0-5 to 0-1 with Declan Hannon notching four times to leave just one between them.

David McInerney stretched the gap and then disaster struck for Limerick as Barry Nash was sent off for a second yellow just prior to the half.

At the break, Clare’s lead was 1-10 to 0-9.

Clare had the first three scores of the second half and eased to promotion from here as Limerick never got within three points of the home side.

2011

Limerick overcame Louth 1-14 to 1-11 in the fifth round of the 2011 National Football League Division 3.

In Drogheda, the away side got off to the perfect start as they kicked the opening five points on the day.

Louth were unlucky to have hit the woodwork twice in the opening half but finally got their break after 24 minutes when Shane Lennon goaled.

A couple of minutes later, the sides were level but Limerick were able to pull ahead once more as they took a 0-9 to 1-4 lead into the dressing room.

Louth regrouped well and were level three times in the opening twenty minutes of the half before Pa Ranahan pounced for a fortuitous goal on 55.

An Eoghan O’Connor point put Limerick three ahead and from here they were able to see out the game with Tom Lee putting the game beyond doubt as Louth sought a second goal.

It was a second consecutive National League win for Limerick who moved off the foot of the table.
