SHC Round Up | Na Piarsaigh and Ballybrown maintain 100% starts ahead of break

The championship now takes a three-week break to allow for the return of the football championship.

Na Piarsaigh are the early pace setters in the top tier of the Limerick SHC as they made it two from two over the weekend, defeating the reigning champions Kilmallock.

They are joined on four points by Ballybrown who have hit the ground running in group two.

In a repeat of the 2017 final in group one, Na Piarsaigh were 1-19 to 1-18 winners over Kilmallock. The Balbec, who had 14-points to spare against Patrickswell in round one, struggled to contain the City side early on as they trailed throughout the first half.

David Dempsey’s goal midway throughout had them 1-12 to 0-10 to the good at the interval.

But on the resumption, Shane O’Brien began to make a telling difference as the teenager goaled with a quarter of an hour to play to give Kilmallock the lead. He could have had a double only for Evan Condon in the Nap goals and this intervention proved crucial as Nap regained the lead, holding on for a one point win.

On Friday night, Doon got their first win of the season as they saw off Adare in Claughaun on a 1-20 to 1-14 scoreline. Adare had the perfect early tonic with John Fitzgibbon goaling to give them a 1-4 to 0-2 lead.

But once Doon got to the pitch of the contest, they dominated, scoring 1-7 in a ten minute period to lead after 20. That lead was 1-10 to 1-6 at the break and from here they kept their opponents at bay for the victory.

Patrickswell also got off the mark, defeating Ahane 2-19 to 0-20. The sides split the first ten scores as neither could pull away from the other. Patrickswell took the first two point lead of the evening mid way through the first but Ahane hit back with three of their own before the ‘Well hit a crucial goal from Jordan Higgins prior to the half for a 1-12 to 0-10 advantage.

Higgins made it three goals in two game immediately after the restart as Patrickswell moved nine clear. But Ahane began to eat into the lead and three Tom Morrissey efforts had it back to a two score game. But Patrickswell held tough to kickstart their campaign.

In group two, Ballybrown laid down a marker with a 2-25 to 1-14 win over Mungret St Pauls in a meeting of the two first round winners. Mungret had the lead three times in the first five minutes but on each occasion they were pegged back by their City neighbours as they took control with seven out of the next eight scores for a 0-10 to 0-4 advantage.

Josh Adams furthered that lead with their first goal leaving it 1-15 to 0-6 at the break.

Mungret had the first three scores of the second half, but a second Ballybrown goal, this one coming from Byran Griffin, re established their lead. Niall Mulcahy goaled for Mungret who had it back to six points with ten to play. Bur from here, Ballybrown found another purple patch to ease to victory.

Kildimo Pallaskenry avenged their first round defeat with a 0-18 to 0-11 win over South Liberties to draw the sides level in the table. Like most other ties on Saturday evening, the teams traded early scores with the teams deadlocked five times inside a quarter of an hour.

KP moved into a healthy lead with four on the bounce as South Liberties replied with a brace that had it 0-11 to 0-9 at the interval.

But Liberties would only find the target twice in the second period as KP eased to the win.

Garryspillane also got off the mark with a hard fought 2-17 to 1-18 win over Blackrock. The Bouncers had the final four scores of the game, including their second goal to earn victory.

Paudie Leahy found the net for the Rockies after seven minutes as they controlled the opening period, leading 1-13 to 0-9 at the interval.

Garryspillane started the second brightly and were within a point with a quarter of an hour, bagging their first goal for a 1-15 to 1-14 scoreline.

But Blackrock hit three in a row to move clear before Garryspillane’s late run turned the contest to leave the Rockies pointless after a pair of games.

The championship now takes a three week break before three successive rounds of action.
