TUS knocked out of Fitzgibbon Cup with UL Limerick’s only quarter-finalist

The Limerick outfit were bested by ATU Galway in Moylish today to bring their season to a premature end.

TUS Midwest have been eliminated from the 2023 Fitzgibbon Cup after falling to a 2-21 to 1-18 defeat against ATU Galway in Moylish today.

Jimmy Browne’s side had a healthy lead at the half but with the aid of the elements, ATU battled back to book their last eight spot.

It leaves UL as Limerick’s sole remaining representative in the competition after Mary I were eliminated on Wednesday evening following the result in Group B between SETU Carlow and DCU Dochas Eireann.

TUS started with Limerick pair Darragh Casey (Granagh Ballingarry) and Sean Long (Na Piarsaigh), taking a 0-15 to 0-8 advantage into the turn of the ends.

But goals from Cian Folan and Niall Cohen had the teams level ten minutes after the restart before the visitors pulled away.

They join the reigning champions UL in advancing to the last eight with the final lineup now complete. The other quarter-finalists are UCC, UCD, DCU Dochas Eireann, SETU Carlow and the University of Galway.

UCD take on UCC on Thursday night with the quarter-final draw to be made after that game.

Last year UL went all the way in beating NUIG to claim a seventh title and first since 2018. They remain the favorites for this year’s competition with many of the 2022 side still in situ while they have added a couple of Limerick’s All-Ireland winners.
