WATCH: “It’s paid off”-Doon’s Mikey O’Brien reflects on their U21 victory

The last twelve months have been highly eventful for Doon’s Mikey O’Brien. As a nineteen year old, he was drafted in at centre back for Doon during the championship where he excelled as Doon reached a first county final in almost twenty years.

Such were his performances, he was called into John Kiely’s Limerick senior team earlier this year where he has since made his competitive debut for the side.

Regardless of his progression to the senior team, the excitement and pride at having won the U21 Premier County title with his club last night was evident in the young man.

“It paid off, all the training all year round. It’s massive to the club. A good start and push on now with the seniors.”

Neither team really pulled away from the other in a relatively low scoring game.

However, when Doon were reduced to 14 men with almost ten minutes remaining, there was a sense that it would be a fifth consecutive final loss for the team in red.

Yet, O’Brien and co battled bravely and came out deserved winners.

When asked had he any doubts when his side lost a man, O’Brien was bullish in his answer.

“No I didn’t. I believed in the fourteen men that were on the field. I believed in all the boys, I did from the start of the year and I always will when I’m playing.”
