Limerick’s U20 hurling manager Diarmuid Mullins sat down with Sporting Limerick’s Jack Neville ahead of the Munster U20 semi-final.
Mullins finds himself working within tight margins, after an All-Ireland minor semi-final, Mullins is now faced with the task of fielding a team for the U20’s Munster semi-final.
“It’s been a different kind of lead into a championship, even in a typical year you would have had an opportunity to look at lads playing colleges hurling and get a better sense of how guys were going, but every team has missed those opportunities”
As Mullins continues to adjust to the beginning of an unusual season, further challenges presented themselves. With a lack of competitive games, Covid-19 restrictions and other dissimilarities from prior years, Mullins was left with little tools to utilise before getting ready for the U20’s Championship.
“A more hectic, I would say, build up than you would usually have to a typical 20’s year. But we’re happy where we are”
Key player’s such as Cathal O’Neil and Colm Coughlan who are eligible for U20’s have been commandeered by John Kiely’s senior squad. Despite Mullins’ preference of having the two talents in his squad for Monday night, he does acknowledge the value of having the two you players be apart of the All-Ireland champions squad.
That’s fantastic that two young players can come through the system at a really young age of only 19, to play senior county hurling with the All-Ireland Champions, that’s a credit to them”
Mullins’ side are set to take on Clare next Monday July 19th in the semi-final of the Bord Gais Energy Munster U/20 Hurling Championship, with throw-in at 7:30pm at the LIT Gaelic Grounds.
