LISTEN: Ahane and Newcastle West set for Senior Camogie Final showdown

This Sunday Ahane take on Newcastle West in the 2019 O’Sullivan Fabricator Senior Camogie Final in Bruff.

Ahane will be looking to win the title for the second consecutive season while Newcastle will be looking a for a first final win ever

These sides met in the semi-final stage last year when Ahane won by a solitary point in a thrilling 0-13 to 0-12 contest to book their place in the final where they defeated Granagh/Ballingarry.

The sides met in the group stages of the competition earlier this year when Ahane were comfortable 1-12 to 1-6 winners.

Ahane topped the table after three wins and a draw from their four outings.

Their solitary draw came against Kileedy in round two.

In the semi-final they beat Granagh/Ballingarry 2-15 to 2-9 in a repeat of last years final.

Ahane manager Phelim Macken is happy that his side didn’t rest on their laurels after winning the title last year after so much final heartbreak with his side set on retaining their championship.

“I suppose we made such a big effort to win it. It was a huge relief because this team have managed to get to county finals but never got to the pinnacle.

Having tasted success, a big big thing for the girls now is not to relinquish it.

For us it’s about repeating last year’s performance. We will need the same level on Sunday and even higher

As for Newcastle, they finished second in the table on five points with two wins, a draw and a loss to show from their four games.

They were victorious over Kileedy in their semi-final, winning out 3-7 to 2-8 in a hard-fought contest.

Speaking ahead of the game, Manager Jamie Lee said he is focusing on his sided putting in a positive performance on the day.

“We hope to do our best and put in a performance on the day. If we put in a good performance, then we have a really good chance of winning.

Finals can be iffy, you could be favourites or underdogs and still win on the day so we hope to just give a good account of ourselves.

Go out, have no regrets and leave it all out on the field!”

Although Ahane have won the last two championship contests, Newcastle would overcome the East side in the league semi-final by a point before going on to defeat Kileedy in the final.

With that being said, this Sunday promises to be another tight encounter.
