Limerick Hurling Team of the Decade: Left Corner Back

The decade that was 2010-2019 is fast coming to an end.

For the Limerick hurlers, it was a mixed decade that started with a protest but would ultimately deliver a first All-Ireland title in 45 years.

Overall, Limerick won one All-Ireland title, Two Munster Championships, a Division 1 League Title and A Division 2 League title.

Over the next fifteen days in the lead up to Christmas, I will select my team of the decade that saw Limerick play 40 championship games and 68 League games.

Already we have had our goalkeeper, right corner back and full-back.

Today we look at the left corner-back position.

Left Corner Back

Seamus Hickey

Honours: All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, Munster Senior Hurling Championship, Division 1 League Title, Division 2 League Title, Young Hurler of the Year, All-Star.

A servant of the Limerick team for eleven years, Hickey played all over the pitch for his county.

He burst onto the scene in 2007, winning Young Hurler of the Year from corner back before moving up the field, playing wing back, midfield and in the half-forward line in 2013 where he won his one and only Munster medal.

He recovered from a torn ACL in August 2013, to win an All Star in 2014 as a corner back once more.

That year he was simply unbelievable, putting the shackles on everyone he marked, winning the Man of the Match award in the All-Ireland semi-final despite being on the losing side.

Announced his retirement from the intercounty scene in the wake of Limerick’s 2018 All-Ireland triumph.

Honourable Mention: Richie English

English is one of two All Stars to miss out on selection but his contribution since joining the panel in 2016 has been immense. A star for the U21 All-Ireland winning team in 2015, winning U21 Hurler of the Year, English has carried that form into the senior ranks and is up there with the very best in the business currently.
