What Limerick need to happen to reach All Ireland Camogie Quarter Finals

Limerick currently lie in 4th place in Group 2 of the Liberty Insurance Senior Camogie Championship but are level on points with second place Offaly. Limerick’s inferior points difference sees them lie in 4th with two rounds of fixtures left.

However, Limerick will have a rest this weekend as they have a bye week meaning that after this weekend’s action, they will know exactly what they require to make the quarter finals.

Cork look certain to finish top of the group which means Limerick’s best chance of progression is securing one of the Quarter final spots, those being 2nd and 3rd position in the group. Offaly face Cork this weekend while Wexford meet Tipperary. The following weekend Limerick face Wexford whilst Offaly play Tipperary.

Permutations

This means that Limerick will be hoping that Tipperary can do them a favour by beating Wexford this weekend (hopefully by a big margin) and that Limerick can finish off Wexford the following week at home. This would leave John Tuohy’s on six points and Wexford on three points, level with Tipp in 4th and 5th depending on scoring difference.

However, if Tipp win their remaining games they could sneak into the Quarter Finals alongside Limerick. For this outcome to happen, Cork would need to beat Offaly this weekend and Tipp repeat the trick against the faithful county in the final group game.

This would leave Limerick (should they beat Wexford) on six points with Tipp, while Offaly and Wexford would remain on three points, outside the quarter final spots. Either way, John Tuohy and his team will have a clear indication of their requirements heading into their final game.

Second place in Group 2 faces the third place team in Group 1 in the quarter final and vice versa. Group 1 is a much tighter affair with the top four all within reach of top spot.

Kilkenny are in the driving seat to finish top of the group with only one round of group games remaining. If Kilkenny beat Dublin they will finish top of the table. A Dublin win will see them qualify for at least the QFs. Clare must win to secure a place in the knockout stages whilst Galway know a win will see them through, possibly as group winners.

Kilkenny are favourites to beat Dublin and this will mean Limerick’s likely opponents if they finish third will be Galway. However, camogie is an unpredictable game, and once Limerick reach the knockout stages who is to know what will happen.
