PIHC Round Up | Bruff and Glenroe level at the top after third round action

Each of the eight teams were in action for the third successive weekend with the table beginning to take shape.

It is tight at the top of the Limerick Premier Intermediate Championship table with two teams level on five with a pair more just one point back after three rounds.

Bruff moved to the top of the table outright with a hard fought 1-17 to 1-14 win over Dromin Athlacca on Thursday evening. Ray Hourigan’s side looked in disarray early on in the contest as their South neighbours dominated the opening exchanges.

Dromin Athlacca raced into a 1-9 to 0-2 lead inside a quarter of an hour with David Breen hitting the net. The concession of frees either side of the half allowed Bruff back into the game and incredibly they found themselves ahead when Danny O’Leary fired into the roof of the net inside five minutes of the restart. And from here they held on for the win.

On the same evening, Effin made it two on the trot with a comprehensive 0-25 to 1-9 victory against Knockainey. The Intermediate Champions dominated the opening half, scoring the first three points before Knockainey got off the mark. The next seven then came the way of the green and white outfit as they held a 0-14 to 0-3 lead at the interval.

That advantage was out to twelve when Patrick Reale found the net for Knockainey. But Effin had the final four scores to ease to an easy win to move into second in the table.

Monaleen made up for their second round defeat as they overcame Newcastle West for a 2-17 to 1-11 win on Friday evening.

After contrasting results in round two, Monaleen started the brighter and were 0-7 to 0-4 to the good on 20 minutes in Rathkeale.

Mark O’Dwyer then goaled for the city side who led 1-10 to 0-8 at the interval. Luke Murphy then raised a green flag for Monaleen on the resumption as they moved ten points clear.

Newcastle West had a goal of their own to make it 2-13 to 1-8 but Monaleen eased to victory from here to overtake the West side in the table.

On Saturday evening, Glenroe overtook Bruff for top spot in the PIHC as they comfortably beat Cappamore 2-24 to 0-18.

Just four points separated the sides at the interval with Glenore leading 0-13 to 0-9. But they ensured an unbeaten start to the season, dominating the second half for a comprehensive twelve point win that was enough to move ahead of Bruff and into the #1 spot.

Glenroe are on five points with a pair of wins to go with a draw, an identical record to Bruff. They lead them with a superior points difference ahead of Effin and Monaleen who are on four points.

Newcastle are a point back on three, Dromin Athlacca have two, Knockainey on one while Cappamore remain pointless.
