UL host SETU Carlow in knockout Sigerson Cup clash

Last year’s finalists let their chance of a quarter-final spot slip as they were reeled in by TU Dublin in the second round.

The University of Limerick will play host to SETU Carlow in the third round of the Sigerson Cup this Tuesday evening with a place in the quarter-finals on the line.

The winners will progress to the last eight while it will be the end of the road for the losing outfit.

UL reached the final last year and looked like cruising into the quarters as they led by six in their second-round clash with TU Dublin last week. However, the Dublin college rallied with 2-4 unanswered in the second half. UL battled back to level proceedings but were eventually bested on penalties.

TU Dublin are joined by DCU, University of Galway and St Marys in the the quarter-final with the remaining four to be decided this week.

SETU Carlow kept their hopes alive last weekend with a 2-9 to 0-12 victory over last year’s semi-finalists MTU Kerry. The Leinster college were beaten by six by St Mary’s in the first round and have Limerick’s Tommy Griffin in their squad.

UL can call upon the services of Limerick duo John Hayes and Ronan McElligott with the latter kicking a pair of points in last week’s defeat.

UL are still seeking a first-ever title after losing to NUIG in the decider last Spring. That was only their second final appearance with Conor Flaherty, Jack Coyne, Eoghan McLoughlin, Connell Dempsey, Daniel Walsh and Ciaran Downes all remaining from the starting team in that defeat.
