Cian Lynch and Sean Finn dealing with minor knocks but David Reidy “has a few weeks to go yet” | John Kiely

Speaking after the contest, John Kiely said the players were keen to get games under their belt with the championship just five weeks away.

There was little sign of ring rust for Mike Casey and Aaron Gillane on their first starts of the season yesterday with the duo key in Limerick’s comfortable win over Wexford in the final round of the league.

Gillane shot 1-5, albeit his goal came in fortuitous circumstances with a dropping shot hitting off the Patrickswell man and rolling into the net. Nonetheless, he looked back to his sharp best in just a second appearance of the season while Casey got on the scoresheet with a spectacular long-range effort.

Speaking after the contest, John Kiely said the players were keen to get games under their belt with the championship just five weeks away.

“All of these guys are all trying to get up to match practice now you know and that’s going to take a bit of time, it’s not going to happen overnight and you can see that. I’m very happy we came out of it without any further injuries I think that’s a hugely important piece for us. We’re only five weeks away from Championship now so that’s the last thing you want but at the same time we do want to get as many competitive games under our build in preparation for the championship and no better opportunity than that next week playing the form team in the league.”

Gearoid Hegarty also started the game after missing out on the Westmeath win with a knock. Sean Finn and Cian Lynch were absent on Sunday afternoon with Kiely providing a positive update on the duo saying it is “nothing serious.”

“Just minor minor things. We’re trying to mind fellas and get them back to full fitness. Little small things nothing serious.”

Another who has been absent in recent weeks is David Reidy who came off against Clare in the second round with a hamstring injury with the Dromin Athlacca native still a bit off returning.

“David Reidy is doing really well and his recovery is coming along nicely but he has a few weeks to go yet.”

Limerick will be back in action this weekend when they take on Tipperary in the League semi-final with the final down for decision just a fortnight prior to the championship kick off.

Whether we see Finn, Casey and Reidy before then remains to be seen but Limerick have the luxury of a squad depth that is unrivaled in the country.
