Aaron Gillane wins 2023 Hurler of the Year

Patrickswell sharpshooter Aaron Gillane crowned a superb 2023 for both himself and Limerick by claiming the 2023 All Star Hurler of the Year award. This compliments his fourth All-Star, having won in 2019, 2020, 2022 and now 2023.

The 27-year-old forward becomes the third Patrickswell man in a row to claim the gong, following Cian Lynch (2021) and Diarmaid Byrnes (2022). The award was also won by Lynch, 2018, and Gearoid Hegarty in 2020. Only Kilkenny, 10 times winners, have won this individual award more since its inception in 1995.

Limerick are the first county to win four HOTY’s in a row, having been the first to do three-in-a-row 12 months ago.

Gillane pips teammates Kyle Hayes and Byrnes, who were among seven Limerick players to claim All Stars which were announced on Thursday.

Gillane’s form was at times, irresistible, as he helped Limerick to a fifth Munster title on the bounce with a haul of 1-11 against Clare at the TUS Gaelic Grounds in June. He followed this up with a brace of green flags against Galway before contributing to a great team display in the decider against Kilkenny.

As well as his form in the green, Gillane was also in great form for his native club, and finished as top scorer in the 2023 Limerick Senior Hurling Championship.

Limerick’s 2023 All-Stars collected their honors on Friday evening, in Dublin. Dan Morrissey, Diarmaid Byrnes, Kyle Hayes, Darragh O’Donovan, William O’Donoghue, Tom Morrissey and Aaron Gillane gave Limerick a Magnificent Seven.
