LISTEN: Vital victory for Young Munster over Garryowen in AIL derby

Young Munster earned what could prove to be a crucial AIL victory over bitter rivals Garryowen at Tom Clifford Park on Friday evening.

The win saw Gearoid Prendergast’s gain ground on third from bottom UCC. However, Terenure’s shock win against Lansdowne saw them keep tabs on The Cookies.

Garryowen made a superb start to the game with Peadar Collins scoring a try and then converting it to give his side a 7-0.

Munsters responded and cut the gap to one point after two Shane Airey penalties but another successful Collins strike from the kicking tee saw Garryowen 10-7 ahead at half time.

It was a titanic encounter in the second half but two further Airey penalties saw Munsters to the 12-10 win.

Munsters head coach Gearoid Prendergast was a happy win after the game. Listen to his interview below. Credit to Live95fm for the audio.

Elsewhere, Shannon fell to a 27-24 defeat to Dublin University at Thomond Park’s back pitch on Saturday.

Tom Hayes’ side were down 17-12 at the break but were unable to reverse the scoreline in the second half and slip to seventh as a result.

Tony Cusack (2), Eathon Moloney and Pa Ryan crossed for Shannon’s tries, while Fionn McGibney kicked two conversions.

In Division 2A, Old Crescent had a 35-22 win over Galwegians in Rosbrien. The win sees Crescent jump into fifth position, ahead of UL Bohs who lost to Queen’s University 35-3.

Bruff maintained third position in Division 2C thanks to a 25-11 victory in their game against Bangor in Kilballyowen Park.

Thomond are only one point off bottom placed Seapoint following their 22-17 loss to Midleton in Cork.

In the Women’s AIL, UL Bohs kept up their incredible form with a 39-12 win against Cooke on Saturday evening.

They are now one point off top of the table Railway Union with a game in hand.
