On This Day: U21 Footballers push Kerry all the way in 2016 and more!

On this day two years ago, the footballers lost out to Wexford in the League. in 2016 the U21 Footballers fell agonisingly to Kerry in the Munster semi-final.

There was a league double in 2014 as the hurlers defeated Dublin in Croke Park in 2013.

2019

The Limerick footballers fell to a fourth consecutive defeat as they were beaten by a point 0-14 to 1-10 by Wexford in Wexford Innovate Park.

Within 15 minutes, the gap was 0-6 to 0-1 in the hosts favour with Peter Nash the only Limerick man to get on the scoreboard.

They then split the next eight scores with Wexford taking a 0-10 to 0-5 lead into the dressing rooms.

Limerick hit the ground on the restart and kicked three of the next four scores to move within three points of their hosts.

But, Wexford then kicked three of their own to move back into a six point lead.

Wexford wouldn’t score again as a goal from Sean McSweeney and a point from Cillian Fahy left two between the sides with ten to play.

McSweeney made it a one point game but the Shannonsiders couldn’t find the equalizer as Wexford took the win.

2016

The Limerick U21 Footballers pushed Kerry all the way but eventually lost out 1-14 to 2-8 in the Munster semi-final.

Hugh Bourke and Brian Donovan got Limerick off to a flier in Austin Stack Park as they found themselves 0-3 to 0-1 ahead inside the opening five minutes.

Kerry responded with four on the bounce but Bourke had it all square after 22 minutes.

The hosts had the final two scores of the half to give them the 0-7 to 0-5 advantage at the short whistle.

But on the restart, Kilian Ryan’s mazy run saw him netting as Limerick retook the lead.

Killian Spillane levelled for Kerry and Tony Brosnan pulled them clear as he finished to the net. Limerick’s response was emphatic as Bourke pointed before Brian Fanning netted after nice work by Bourke and Ryan to push them 2-6 to 1-8 head.

Kerry never panicked and Jack Savage levelled from a free and Spillane kicked them two ahead.

Kerry wouldn’t lose the lead from here but Limerick never gave up the fight with Brian Fanning’s score with five to play dragging them within one score of the kingdom.

2014

A late point from Offaly clinched a 2-15 to 2-15 draw with Limerick in the National Hurling League.

Limerick were two clear inside 90 seconds with Kevin Downes and Paul Browne firing over. But their indiscipline cost them as Offaly kept in touch despite not scoring from play in the first half.

At the short whistle the deficit was just two, 0-8 to 0-6 in Limerick’s favour despite their dominance.

Offaly were level quickly after the restart before Graeme Mulcahy shot the games first goal.

Joe Bergin replied with his only score from play of the day but soon Limerick were four in front and cruising.

With ten to play, Offaly suddenly found form an 1-2 without reply saw them move into their first lead of the day.

Mulcahy then notched his second goal of the day and heading into injury time, Limerick were four clear.

But there was time for another twist as Offaly goaled before Bergin pointed his 11th free of the day to draw parity.

In Newcastle West, the footballers were on the wrong side of a 0-18 to 1-6 result against Fermanagh in the fifth round of the League.

The away side completely dominated the opening exchanges as they kicked the first six scores of the day.

Tom Lee got Limerick off the mark after 15 and four minutes later an Eoin Hanrahan goal had it back to two points.

But Limerick failed to kick on as the away side once more went on a scoring spree, moving 0-13 to 1-1 clear before Ian Ryan had the final say of the half with a free.

The second half was a tame affair as Limerick had to wait for the final minute for their first score from play from Hanrahan.

In total they kicked just four scores in the entirety of the second period as Fermanagh eased to a nine point win.

2013

The Limerick hurlers came from behind to record a 1-21 to 1-16 win over Dublin in the third round of the National Hurling League.

The visitors failed to fire in Croke Park and allowed the Dubs to take control early on as they lead for the majority of the opening half.

By 40 minutes the gap was five with Dublin holding a 1-11 to 0-9 advantage.

But led by their impressive full forward line of Declan Hannon, Graeme Mulcahy and Kevin Downes who shot 1-16 of their total, John Allen’s men grew into the game.

Paul Ryan was dismissed for the Dubs in the 53rd minute and moments later Mulcahy had Limerick’s goal as they took the lead.

From here they controlled proceedings, eventually winning out by six to cement their place atop the league table.
