Peter Casey “delighted to get the result” against Waterford following Munster Championship epic

Limerick showed great resilience to get the victory with man of the match Peter Casey highlighting the importance of the result.

Limerick got the job done in difficult circumstances on Sunday afternoon, holding off Waterford for a two-point win to claim the spoils in their Munster opener against the Deise.

Things went to plan in the opening quarter for Limerick as Seamus Flanagan’s goal had them eight in front. But Waterford eeked their way back into the contest, reducing the gap to a single point after the restart with Limerick losing Gearoid Hegarty to a red card and seeing Aaron Gillane’s penalty saved.

However, Limerick showed great resilience to get the victory with man of the match Peter Casey highlighting the importance of the result speaking to RTÉ.

“Delighted to get the result really, it was always going to be about getting the result. We were looking for a performance but just getting the two points on the board in such a tough Munster round-robin is so important.

“It was about sticking to our principles, being patient and the spaces would arise. Our full back line were getting the puckouts and with Waterford playing a sweeper it was always going to be hard to find those spaces but credit to our forwards, we stayed patient, found the space and dug out some crucial scores towards the finish.”

Casey chipped in with a pair of points in the first half but it was his work rate that really stood out with the Na Piarsaigh man key to Limerick’s bright start.

But reduced to 14-men, Casey and co had to dig deep to secure the win as he praised the effort of the side in holding on.

“It was about managing the game as best we could. We had to track runners and obviously, Aaron popped up with a couple of great scores and we won some vital frees down the end which was crucial as well.”

There will be little time for rest for the Limerick contingent with Clare to come to the TUS Gaelic Grounds this Saturday evening as they Banner look to get points on the board while the Treaty aim to maintain a perfect start.
