Treaty United Suffer Narrow Defeat in Athlone

Treaty United’s recent good form came to a halt on Saturday night as they suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to Athlone Town at the Athlone Town Stadium.

Following two successive victories against both DLR Waves and Bohemians, Dave Rooney’s side made another fast start in the Midlands as top scorer Aoife Horgan continued her recent good form with the opening goal.

The lead didn’t last long as the home side equalised on the half hour mark but Horgan was on hand to restore Treaty’s lead as she was set up by strike partner Chloe Connolly.

The home side restored parity ten minutes before half time through Paula Doran and it remained 2-2 until the break. A defensive mistake immedaitely after half-time allowed Kellie Brennan to give Athlone the lead for the first time on the night.

Despite pushing hard for an equaliser, Treaty were unable to prevent the Midlanders picking up their first league win of the season. It is United’s second defeat of the season following an opening day loss to Peamount and they now sit in fifth place in the Women’s National League table.

Treaty United: Karen Connolly, Anna Shine (Doherty), Shannen Parbet, Marie Curtin, Tara O’Gorman, Gillian Keenan, Maura Shine, Cayla Davis (Cronin), Maggie Duncliffe (O’Sullivan), Chloe Connolly (Griffin), Aoife Horgan.
