WATCH: Galway and Limerick meet in the 1980 All-Ireland hurling final

On 2018, Limerick bridged a 45-year gap as they overturned Galway in the All-Ireland hurling final.

Overcoming the defending champions would prove a sweet tonic for Limerick who fell to the same opponents in the decider 28 years previously.

That 1980 final was iconic for so many reasons but largely forgettable for Limerick who would fall at the final hurdle.

The game is widely remembered for Joe Connolly’s post match speech and Joe McDonagh’s rendition of the ‘The West’s Awake’.

The win would also signal the end of a long wait for the Tribesmen who won a first title since 1923.

That Limerick side as loaded with stars such as Leonard Enright, Joe McKenna and Eamonn Cregan.

Check out the epic contest that finished 2-15 to 3-9 in favour of Galway.
