WATCH: Mathewson on competition for places and his future at Munster

With the festive fixtures upon us, Munster scrum half Alby Mathewson has spoken about the competition for places in Johann van Graan’s squad.

After an impressive start to the season for the province, Mathewson has seen his game time reduce significantly since the return of Conor Murray from a neck injury.

However, the New Zealander has said that the strength in depth is beneficial for the squad with each player driving each other on.

“The more competition we have the better because it pushes everyone and no one can get comfortable. It’s the same throughout the squad.”

Mathewson starts for Munster in their Interprovincial tie with Ulster this weekend and is hoping that some quality displays can see the province extend his contract until the end of the season with his current deal running out in March.

“I’m really enjoying myself here and you know hopefully when the time comes up, I can stay on longer because I’ve actually been here since the start of the season. So, all things going well, I started here an would like to finish it out with the boys.”

Mathewson was key in Munster’s early season victory over Ulster where they recorded a 60-0 victory in Thomond Park.
