Limerick junior soccer club Granville Rangers have made a rapid return to action following last Wednesday’s announcement that the club would cease all activities. The club cited the failure to replace important trustees and committee members as the reason for the closure of the club.
Granville honorary secretary John O’Neill stated that the club had “come to a natural end” despite trying desperately to preserve it since January. The foundation of a new committee to “take the club forward” was made on the club’s official Facebook page and can be seen in full below.
“First off as a club we’d like to thank everyone far and wide for their overwhelming support this last week. The club was forced into a painstaking decision of ceasing operations as of 28/5/18. The reaction and support we have received from the Limerick soccer fraternity since this announcement has been nothing short of amazing and from this support we are overjoyed to announce that a committee has been formed to take the club forward. We are so grateful for all the well wishes and memories shared on our page last week. A massive thank you must go to those who put themselves forward to uptake the running of the club. An exciting future awaits us!”
Granville Rangers was founded in 1975 and both the junior and schoolboy teams have enjoyed a lot of success over the years. The junior side have featured in the premier league for many years.
The club were based in Childers Road until 2004 when the Childers Road retail park was developed. As a result, Granville moved to Glenbrook which has been their base ever since. It is able to boast two full sized pitches and a superb dressing room facility.
On the eve of the release of the history of schoolboy league soccer in Limerick on Thursday in Janesboro, the quick formation of a new committee and subsequent return of such an historic club is great news for the Limerick soccer fraternity.
